Tough Questions

  • How fit do I need to be?

Let's be clear, physical fitness is important in every Army role. But don't be put off - the progressive training you receive is designed to prepare you for the challenges ahead. That said you must also help yourself by exercising regularly well before you arrive. The fitter you are the easier you will find the training.

  • How hard is soldier training?

Training isn't easy and you wouldn't expect it to be. But it is designed to get the best out of you and to help you succeed. So if you arrive in the right frame of mind you should be fine. Basic training lasts 14 weeks for adults (17-29 years old) and between 20 and 42 weeks for juniors (16-17 years old and 1 month). After basic training you progress to specialist training according to your chosen trade or job.

  • How often do I train in the TA?

In most Territorial Army units you train for about three hours, one night a week. In addition you complete one weekend a month and participate in an annual two-week camp for basic training which takes place in the UK or overseas. National Territorial units do not train on weekday evenings.

  • What if I don't like it?

We understand that you may decide an Army life is not for you. If you are under 18 years of age you can leave within the first six months of soldier training. If you are 18 or over you can leave within the first three months. This is subject to you serving a minimum of 28 days and giving 14 days notice.

Initial Training

If you are going to do it right, you need to do it right from the start. Basic training will turn you from a civilian into a soldier or officer and prepare you for the next stage of your career. It is physically and mentally challenging, but as long as you arrive with an open mind, you'll be fine. Remember, everything you are taught, you are taught for a reason - it could save your life one day or help you save someone else's.
