Tough Questions

  • How much will I get paid first-up as a soldier?

All recruits start on the same wage regardless of their age. So based on a 30-day month, as a recruit you can expect approximately £780 paid into your bank account. This is after tax, National Insurance, food and accommodation charges have been stopped from your pay.

  • How much will I get paid when I become an officer?

You can expect to start on £23,500 - 28,500 depending on your level of education. Your food and accommodation will be heavily subsidised meaning more of your salary ends up in your pocket for you to decide how to spend it.

  • Do females get the same pay?

Absolutely. Our employees are paid according to their rank and trade qualifications. Thousands of females play a vital role throughout the Army. Gender is not an issue.

  • Can I take a Gap Year?

From mid 2007 the Gap Year Commission and Undergraduate Army Placement will be discontinued due to higher priority funding requirements. The Army continues to attract and recruit the best of young graduates through other schemes such as the University Officers Training Corps.

  • Do soldiers living overseas get paid more?

Your basic pay depends on rank and trade qualifications and remains the same if you're serving overseas. However, due to the difference in the cost of living in some countries you may get an extra allowance to offset extra costs.

Recognised Qualifications

Qualification rewards
The Army thrives on the education of its soldiers and officers and will reward them accordingly. The Army is currently keen to hear from: linguists, chefs and engineers.

If you have qualifications from civilian life and are considering bringing your subject, trade or professional skills to the Army, you may be awarded anything from £500 to £50,000 - not a bad start to anyone's career. How much you receive will depend on the type and level of qualification you have. For further details please contact your local Army Careers Information Office or the Online Office.
