  • How much will I get paid when I become an officer?

    You can expect to start on £24,615 - 30,368 depending on your level of education. Your food and accommodation will be heavily subsidised meaning more of your salary ends up in your pocket for you to decide how to spend it.

     
  • How much will I get paid first-up as a soldier?

    All recruits start on the same wage regardless of their age. So based on a 30-day month, as a recruit you can expect approximately £780 paid into your bank account. This is after tax, National Insurance, food and accommodation charges have been stopped from your pay.

Financial reward packages

Further Education Bursary
If you're aged between 16 and 32 and are considering further education before going on to be a soldier in the Army, find out how you could earn up to £5,000 to help you during and after your studies.

Welbeck - the Defence Sixth Form College
High-achieving students who would like to become an officer in the Army can attend Welbeck. This residential sixth-form college offers you a two-year A-level education combined with personal development and physical training. After Welbeck, you could go on to university on a generous technical bursary, before joining the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to prepare for a career as an officer in one of the Army's technical corps. 

Army sixth-form scholarships
If you are still at school but already have your sights set on a career as an officer in the Army, you might qualify for an Army sixth-form scholarship. You could get paid £1,500 a year to study your A levels, and gain  a guaranteed place at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

The Army Undergraduate Bursary
If you're heading off to university soon or are already there and want to join the Army as an officer, you'll be eligible to apply for financial sponsorship from the Army. Army undergraduate bursaries are awarded to approximately 250 candidates each year.

Medical, dental, veterinary and nursing schemes
If you are an undergraduate medical, dental, nursing or veterinary student and interested in joining the Army Medical Services, an Army Undergraduate Bursary or Cadetship could be a huge advantage to you.

The Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS) Bursary
If you're technically minded and are studying or heading off to study an Army accredited degree at one of the Army's selected universities and want to join the Army as an officer, you'll be eligible to apply for enhanced financial sponsorship from the Army. Those selected will join the Army's Defence Technical Officer Engineering Education Scheme (DTOEES) where places are only awarded to a small number of high calibre candidates each year.
