Joining as a Territorial soldier
The Territorial Army (TA) forms one quarter of the British Army and trains people to be soldiers in their spare time. Here's how you can join:
Step 1: Choose your unit
There are two types of Territorial units. Local Territorial units are spread across the country. Each unit recruits from the surrounding area. National units recruit soldiers with specific skills from all over the UK but have a single base.

Step 2: Go on a visit
Contact the units you’re interested in and arrange a time to visit them. This will give you chance to talk to the other soldiers and find out if you’re ready to start your application. If you want to join a National unit, your first visit may coincide with an initial interview.
Step 3: Attend an interview
When you’ve chosen a unit, you’ll be invited to an interview. This will be an informal discussion where you’ll be asked about your fitness levels and medical history. You’ll also have the chance to put your own questions to the Permanent Staff Administration Officer.
Step 4: Start your training
You’ll be invited to attend a Recruit Selection Course (RSC) where you complete some mental and physical tests. If you pass, you’ll be formally enlisted into the Army ready to begin your training. You start by learning basic military skills and move on to more specialised trade training.

Contract and commitment
You can adapt your life in the TA to the level of experience you have and the amount of time you can give. All entrants sign up for twelve years, but you can leave at any time. The annual training commitment ranges from 19 days in National units to 27 days in Regional units, including a two-week annual camp.
