Tough Questions

  • Can I go straight into the SAS?

The Special Air Service is the principal special forces unit of the British Army. To qualify you must meet a very demanding physical and mental selection process and entry is only open to those already serving in the Army.

  • How hard is soldier training?

Training isn't easy and you wouldn't expect it to be. But it is designed to get the best out of you and to help you succeed. So if you arrive in the right frame of mind you should be fine. Basic training lasts 14 weeks for adults (17-29 years old) and between 20 and 42 weeks for juniors (16-17 years old and 1 month). After basic training you progress to specialist training according to your chosen trade or job.

  • What's my commitment to the TA?

Soldiers sign up for a minimum of 12 years, while officers sign up until the age of 60. However, both have options to resign during this contract, provided they are not scheduled to deploy on operations.

  • How long will it take me to get to RMAS?

All candidates need to complete a series of interviews and tests to check that they're ready. If you're joining as a Regular, you could start at Sandhurst within a few months of applying. Territorial officers complete most of their officer training before going to Sandhurst for a special three-week course, and the whole process typically takes about two years.
