Tough Questions

  • How often do I train in the TA?

In most Territorial Army units you train for about three hours, one night a week. In addition you complete one weekend a month and participate in an annual two-week camp for basic training which takes place in the UK or overseas. National Territorial units do not train on weekday evenings.

  • What's my commitment to the TA?

Soldiers sign up for a minimum of 12 years, while officers sign up until the age of 60. However, both have options to resign during this contract, provided they are not scheduled to deploy on operations.

  • Can I join the Army if I've used drugs?

The Army recognises the issue of drug misuse in civilian life, so if you've had issues with drugs in the past this will not normally prevent you from joining. But once you enlist, the Army has a zero tolerance attitude to illicit drug use. You will be liable by law to random compulsory drug testing and if these tests return positive, you will almost certainly be discharged.

The TA and civilian life

The best of both worlds
As a Territorial, you combine your civilian career with military training in your spare time. It gives you the best of both worlds: the excitement of Army activities with the security of your existing job. As training takes place on weekends and/or evenings, it’s easy to combine the two and still have time left over for your family and friends.

Support from the Army will help you to manage your time effectively, but it’s also important to develop a good relationship with your employer and to find out what your training commitments are so you can plan ahead.
