The Rifles

About us
With a proud history that goes all the way back to Gibraltar in 1704, The Rifles is the British Army’s largest Infantry Regiment – comprising five regular battalions and two TA battalions. Operating in Light, Commando Infantry, Mechanised and Armoured Infantry roles – we are an exciting and dynamic force that delivers battle-winning capability.

Our soldiers enjoy the distinction of being known as Riflemen. We are recognised by our green jackets and silver bugle horn; a mark of the elite. Our motto is Swift and Bold.

What we do
As a Rifleman, you’ll be trained to the highest standards in the latest Infantry small arms, mortars, anti-tank and surveillance equipment. Effective in a wide range of Army Operations.

At home in urban, desert, mountain and jungle environments, you will be forward-thinking, self-disciplined and thrive on loyalty and professionalism. You will be an expert in stealth. And know how to operate in support of Armoured and Mechanised Units to sustain high levels of firepower and mobility.

You’ll become equally effective in policing urban areas, peacekeeping and providing humanitarian support.

We settle for nothing less than the best. Join us and you'll become part of a unique family that enjoys one of the most exciting roles in the Army.

Have you got what it takes?
Reaching the high standards expected of a Rifleman is as tough as it is rewarding. You'll need to draw on all your reserves of commitment and determination – and more.

Expect your training to be challenging and thorough. Expect to do things you never thought you were capable of. And expect to learn skills and gain a sense of confidence and achievement that will set you up for life.

You can become a Rifleman either full-time or part-time, in the Territorial Army (TA) while also working in your civilian job. But whether you join us full-time or part-time, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in adventure training and go on exercises all over the world – as well as the chance to serve on Operations such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan.

So if you’re up to the challenge – and you want something different out of life – get in touch.

Once a Rifleman, always a Rifleman.
